Thien Mu Pagoda on the Perfume River
Landmark~40 minThe oldest active pagoda in Hue, founded in 1601. The seven-storey Phuoc Duyen tower was added in 1844, and the Austin car that carried monk Thich Quang Duc to Saigon in 1963 is still kept behind the main hall.

Lunch: bun bo Hue at a local shop

The Imperial City and Forbidden Purple City
Landmark~1.5–2 hoursWalk in through Ngo Mon Gate to the Thai Hoa Palace, where the emperors held court, and on to what remains of the Forbidden Purple City. Much was destroyed in 1968; the guide shows what has been rebuilt and what is still a ruin.

A royal tomb: Khai Dinh or Tu Duc
Landmark~1 hourChoose one. Khai Dinh's tomb (finished 1931) climbs 127 steps up a hillside and hides a hall covered in porcelain and glass mosaic. Tu Duc's tomb (1867) is a quiet garden of lakes, pines and pavilions where the emperor wrote poetry.

Yes, if you have one spare day and don't want to change hotels. The drive is about 3 hours each way, so you get roughly 5 hours in Hue — enough for the Imperial City, Thien Mu Pagoda, one royal tomb and lunch. If you want more than one tomb or the Perfume River boat, stay a night in Hue instead.
Over the pass on the way there, so you can stop at the summit and see Lang Co lagoon, and through the tunnel on the way back to save about 30 minutes. If the pass is covered in cloud or rain, the driver takes the tunnel both ways.
Khai Dinh is the more striking one — a grey concrete hillside tomb with a gold, porcelain and glass mosaic interior — but it has 127 steps. Tu Duc is flat, green and calm, with lakes and pavilions, and suits families and anyone who prefers a slower walk. Both can fit if you start early.
Cover your shoulders and knees; the pagoda and some palace halls ask for it. Wear shoes you can walk in for two hours on stone and gravel. Hue gets more rain than Hoi An, especially from September to December, so bring a light rain jacket or umbrella.
